I aim for handbag(purse) plus one bag only, and here in Oz can hit the 7kg carry-on limit when travelling with Virgin, or on regional flights.
The backbone of my travel wardrobe is made of lightweight, breathable, stretchy fabrics, that can be layered without too much bulk, washed easily, and dry overnight or sooner…
I loathe jeans, uncomfortable, easily damaged or fugly shoes ( yes I mean all low cut pumps, mules or stilettos) and anything constricting or dry-clean only.
Fine Merino Wool (and Cashmere)
Works over a wide range of temperatures, non-stinky, stays warm even when wet, dries fast. Cashmere is light and warm, but pills easily in “rub” areas, and is more fragile in both washing and wearing. I use shampoo with a dash of conditioner when travelling, otherwise eucalyptus wool mix to clean – drycleaning makes the fibres brittle, the garment feel harsh and makes it die faster.
Featherweight zip-neck black merino base layer top is a staple, but I also have an assortment of long and short-sleeved jumpers and cardigans in both fibres – mosttly picked up in sales. Pashminas are my friend – I have far too many…
Nylon Mesh
Durable, breathable, creases fall out and will dry in an hour or two.
Slinky
Weighs fairly heavy, but non-sweaty, uncrushable and easy drying. Usually I wear it as my travel outfit.
Supplex
Stretchy, wicks sweat, dries in a flash, packs into nothing. Tunics/tshirts and leggings give you base layers in cold weather, exercise gear and night attire as options without cutting into your daywear allowance.
